Agnes Obel is a Danish-born, Berlin-based singer who does more or less the same thing as Tiny Ruins, but more ambitiously and more coherently. Her lilting folk is piano and not guitar-based, but she has the same solemn little girl voice and quixotic lyrical style. Obel paints a simpler picture, evoking over and over the image of river side and the cleansing baptism it promises while the music stirs memories of a lost or half-imagined world. Beautiful.
