Cretan folk, Italian percussion and shoegaze rock: Brunswick Ballroom’s BMF lineup explained

Brunswick Music Festival returns for its 38th year from 1-8 March, and Brunswick Ballroom has six gigs on the bill.

The beloved inner-north venue is pulling plenty of weight during this year’s Brunswick Music Festival, with a lineup spanning Cretan folk traditions, Italian percussion, shoegaze rock, brass-fuelled funk and one of Australia’s most iconic voices. Curated by local legend MzRizk and produced by Merri-bek City Council, the week-long festival spreads across venues, galleries and public spaces throughout the suburb, with Brunswick Ballroom picking up half a dozen shows worth marking in your calendar.

Kicking things off on 3 March, Greek folk siblings Xylourides bring their Cretan musical heritage to the venue for a rare Australian performance. Two days later, BMF X Crown Ruler X Research Records takes over on 5 March with Italian percussionist Alfio Antico and producer Go Dugong, joined by Rafet and Berlin-based Syrian musician Khaled Kurbeh.

On 6 March, Hellraiser: A Fundraiser brings together shoegaze outfit Flyying Colours alongside Screensaver and The Empty Threats. The following evening, Torres Strait Islander icon Christine Anu takes the stage for a headline set celebrating one of the most distinctive voices in Australian music.

The festival’s final day sees Brunswick Ballroom hosting two shows back to back. The family-friendly Small Fry Rock matinee session kicks off at midday with Busby Marou and Lisa Mitchell, before Horns of Leroy closes out the venue’s festival program from 6pm with support from Jake Amy Trio and MO’JU on the decks.
