Cee-Lo has lifted the iconic bass line from Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, shifted a few notes, slowed it down and built a middling sort of pop song around it. His voice is still amazing – really, truly awesome – but the playfulness of Fuck You has been replaced with synthesised strings and plodding synth accents. The chorus is big, but not big enough, and the lyrics (“Bright lights and the big city, it belongs to us tonight”) are pure wallpaper.
