Wilco: The Whole Love

The Whole Love is a very good album and the first track Art Of Almost even sounds like Radiohead. Jeff Tweedy has taken his recent producing gig, Mavis Staples’ You Are Not Alone, to heart. This doesn’t just sound like a cut and paste Wilco album, from the opener on you feel in very safe hands. Dawned On Me is the classic Wilco sound of the Summerteeth era, as is Born Alone. The title track is almost unrelentingly upbeat, but perfectly so. Open Mind a relaxed moment, ensuring the album isn’t psychotically happy. Capitol City has a certain Randy Newman rag to it, Sunloathe gives you the same suspicious feeling that Julian Lennon’s Salt Water Well In My Eyes did, “I think John Lennon may have written this.” The album signs off with a lovely track, One Sunday Morning, which despite running 12 minutes, never wears out its welcome. An album likely to make many “best of the year” list in the coming months.
