Solkyri: No House

solkyri.jpg

Solkyri fit beautifully with the collective’s manifesto and fall squarely under the post-rock umbrella, creating stirring instrumental music by way of burgeoning rock structures. Their style is more Explosions In The Sky than Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and if you understand that subtle distinction then you’ll appreciate them more than most. Opener Zee Germans slowly rumbles to life with eerie guitar chords and burred organ, while This Can’t Wait! takes the conventional but no-less effective approach of a slow-boil expansion of its central riff.

The Sydney three-piece share multi-instrumental duties with extra players contributing performances, notably some flute adds panache to Court-A while rich cello colours the eleven-minute centrepiece Strangers. Finally, celebratory brass punctuates the penultimate track Young Man, You Will Die Of This Company. Such eccentric titles proving that Mogwai, another post-rock cornerstone, has more of an influence than just a musical one. Which is really the only criticism to level at No House, it clearly demonstrates Solkyri’s command of the key elements of the genre, but they are yet to develop their own sense of voice.
