Solaires

Who or what would you say are the main inspirations behind your sound? Solaires was initially started as a sci-fi themed synth-wave project. Genre-wise I’ve evolved away from synth-wave over the years, but the overall dystopian sci-fi vibes have remained. Blade Runner is a constant point of reference, in sound and vision.

Out of all the bullshit you can do with your life, why music? Producing music and experimenting with sound is a constantly evolving obsession. Similar to the ‘chasing the dragon’ analogy – nothing’s ever quite perfect and nothing’s ever fully explored. There’s always something more to do, and it’s really fun. Sometimes my fiancée says she likes the sound of what I’m working on, that’s a pretty good feeling too – she’s a tough critic.

What’s a piece of equipment that’s essential to Gravel Pit’s sound? The Ableton Live Push controller has really enabled me to push the intricacy of my sound design and beat programming. I love that thing. I also really love the distortion on my Novation Bass Station synth, combined with a tape delay sound, things get lush.

Done any ripper gigs lately?  I actually haven’t played a Solaires set outside of my studio in about 18 months. I’m using this week’s show at Old Bar to play a whole heap of more experimental beats and breaks I’ve never played out.

Got any pre-gig rituals? I find three pints is good amount to loosen up but stay sharp.
