Single Of The Week

Rebel Yell : High Authority

Sifting a touch of filthy acid house into the recipe, High Authority is a sheer dancefloor power play from Rebel Yell. Just when you think energy levels are redlining, High Authority elevates into overdrive. Sweaty, sweaty stuff.

The Ocean Party : Quality Control

A shimmering ode to self-deprecation and settling for less, the softly sweet Quality Control might lament a lack of the titular concept in the tracks’ themes. The song itself makes the grade, warm and measured, knowing when to breathe.

Frank Ocean : Lens

Frankie really fangs it with the autotune in the latest of his string of standalone new singles. Lens is like a delightfully cooked android crooning over the phone while you cruise over the Westgate at 3am. Lens doesn’t feel like something everlasting, but in the moment, it feels just yours to keep. Frank’s on a bit of a post-Blonde roll, let’s hope it doesn’t grind to a halt with an impending string of festival appearances. Fingers crossed.

Floating Points : Silurian Blue

Floating Points’ greatest strength is an ability to shift between four-to-the-floor electronic compositions into fleshed-out full-band arrangements. As part of a new video work, Silurian Blue ramps into full blown jammy prog territory, befitting of the Mojave-set visuals. It’s all a bit much, really, particularly when the overblown guitar solo kicks in.
