(Sandy) Alex G : Rocket

Over the past seven years, Alex G has managed to produce an album a year. On Rocket, it’s easy to fall into a daze of where you are in the album because the tracks meld together so well. Before you know it, it’s over. Opening with Poison Root, field recordings of dogs barking greet you and visions of the late Nick Drake come to mind. It’s indie-acoustic singer/songwriter for sure, but the songs definitely shine through.

Having recorded the whole album in his bedroom, the production on these songs is immaculate. Alex G has a knack for creating indie-folk music with edge and this latest release is no exception. Across 41 minutes, you are taken through a journey of sonic landscapes that at first listen, may come across as a little confronting to some, but persevere with it. Rocket is a little bit like the unexpected journey of jumping in the Tardis which can be heard most prevalently in Horse and Brick. This is an album for those wanting to mix it up a little.
