Melbourne public transit just got a little more expensive

myki fare increase

MYKI fares have gone up, meaning your PT commute might cost a few more pennies.

It seems like there’s always something to complain about when it comes to Melbourne public transit. I mean sure, we’re said to have one of the best networks in the world, with trams, trains and busses spread out all across the city. But then there’s always the delays, the shutdowns, the creepy guy that always has to sit right next to you…

And then there’s the price. In news no self-respecting Melbournian likes to hear, MYKI fares have gone up yet again, making public transit journeys throughout Victoria more expensive for everyone.

MYKI New Rates

  • Full-day fare: $10.60 ($5.70 for concession)
  • Weekend full-day fare: $7.20 ($3.60 for concession)
  • 60 cents added for rides in metropolitan areas

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

The rate hike came on January 1st, with fares rising by an average of five per cent for all users, in line with the Consumer Price Index rise. A full-day fare will now cost $10.60 or $5.70 for a concession card holder. On weekends and holidays, the fares will remain at $7.20 or $3.60 for concession.

For those travelling throughout the metropolitan area in Zone 1 and 2, 60 cents will be added to each ride. Folks in regional Victoria will also have to open up their wallets, with the regional town bus two-hour fare going up by 20 cents to $2.80 and daily fare will increase by 40 cents to $5.60.

This is the second rate increase in the past six months. Last July, fares were raised by 80 cents for full-fare MYKI holders. This time last year, all-day fares were more than a dollar cheaper for all riders.

For all those wondering, the fine for getting caught without tapping on has stayed the same: $288 for an adult, which is equal to around 27 days of full-fare transit. Do with that information what you will.
