In addition to having an absolute bootful of swagger, IAIWWB at the forefront is a political album addressing many global issues today. Opening cut ‘Little Bit’discusses racial discrimination, while the title track talks about looking past indiscretions and simply loving one another.
Written and produced by Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, the instrumentation on this record is a nod back to the classic soul records of the ‘60s and ‘70s. From glittering piano to country soul guitar licks, Hammond organ to sweet vocal melodies, this record is the gift that keeps on giving. Filled with soulful grooves that will warm your heart and have you hitting repeat, this is definite stocking filler material.
Talking about this album, Staples admits that she can’t be stopped, is too loving and that this album will change the world. Having experienced Mavis Staples earlier this year, rest assured, at 78 her voice still sounds incredible and her stage presence is second to none. With so many issues often swept under the rug, If All I Was Was Black may just be the conversation starter we all need.
