‘Live theatre is truly back’: La Mama announces 2023 summer program

From January 17 2023, La Mama will wake Melbourne from its summer slumber with a snappy opening season.

Midsumma at La Mama kicks things off with five fabulous shows…

The prolific team BYTE bring Shadowfall, written and directed by Joachim Matschoss. This is followed by HOMOPHONIC!, where the winning composition from the 2023 Homophonic! Pride Prize: The Composer Award will be premiered.

Freddie Lubowitz’ The Angel With Blue Eyes, asks us what do we do when the person we most love in this world shows us the most horrifying parts of themselves?

La Nonna’s Saucy Sauce Day brings an afternoon of love and food and love for food to the heart of Little Italy: La Mama HQ’s forecourt.

And finally a show La Mama says you cannot possibly allow yourselves to miss: The Six Guys an Immigrant Trans Person of Colour Will Date in Melbourne, written by Dax Carnay and directed by Beng Oh.

La Mama’s major show for the season is The Grief Trilogy, the culmination of Liv Satchell’s acclaimed award-winning three shows: I sat and waited but you were gone too long, my sister feather, and let bleeding girls lie. These plays have been created over the last seven years with an ensemble of Melbourne’s leading theatre artists: Chanella Macri, Belinda McClory and Emily Tomlins.

On top of these shows, La Mama features Sally McKenzie’s Way with sound design by J David Franzke, Edna O’Brien’s Virginia brought to you by Heather Lythe, our postponed Fringe show Not All Dictators by Tiffany Barton, Natali Blok and Kate Smurthwaite, Judy Dalziel’s Radioactive Cockroach, Ella Filar’s Kovid Rat Kabarett Goes Spiral, and Romi Kupfer and Diane Stubbing’s Flesh Disease.

They also have playreadings galore, La Mama Kids, and the ever-popular La Mamica series returns in fine style.

Artistic Director Liz Jones says: “Summer at La Mama is just bursting with vitality. A dazzling feast of Midsumma offerings, a journey of great depth with The Grief Trilogy, and a vast array of diverse theatrical offerings. Live theatre is truly back! Roll on 2023!”

It all kicks off January 17 but there are some amazing productions happening throughout December as well. Check out everything La Mama right here.
