Adam Kay
Words by staff writer

Adam Kay is bringing 'Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas to Australia and New Zealand this December, ending in Melbourne.

The former junior doctor behind This Is Going To Hurt has built ‘Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas around stories from his bestselling festive diaries, alongside new stand-up and a handful of comedy songs.

Adam Kay closes the run at Hamer Hall on 15 December, the last of 10 shows spread across the two countries and his only Melbourne date on this tour, with tickets moving through promoter Bohm Presents.

Kay is a BAFTA-winning writer, comedian and former junior doctor who stepped away from medicine to write and perform. His debut memoir spent more than a year at number one on the Sunday Times chart, won 10 national awards, sold over three million copies and was translated into 37 languages. It was later adapted into a television series that he wrote.

The live show shares its name with ‘Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas, one of three adult titles Kay has taken to the top of that chart alongside This Is Going To Hurt and Undoctored. The stage version threads diary highlights through fresh writing and his award-winning stand-up, pitched at anyone who has ever clocked on over the festive break. As a live performer he has sold out West End seasons and toured internationally.

Away from touring, Kay ranks among the country’s bestselling children’s authors, with Kay’s Anatomy, billed as the fastest-selling kids’ non-fiction title of the decade, and the Dexter Procter series to his name. His first novel, A Particularly Nasty Case, arrived in 2025. Presale sign-ups are open now through Bohm Presents, with the December run reaching Perth, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane before crossing to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and returning for Sydney and Newcastle ahead of the Melbourne finale.
