Laura swings in low and heavy on the new single, taken from her forthcoming longplayer, A Creature I Don’t Know (out September 9). The song builds strangely, beginning with minimal instrumentation, and then folding out unexpectedly in quixotic ribbons. The arch, always climbing melody and lack of a central chorus gives the song an almost Joanna Newsom quality – at least until the drums kick in and Sophia becomes a peppy alt country tune. Ambitious and very beautiful.
