Jinja Safari : Locked By Land

Their debut album Locked By Land is a fuller, more in-depth exploration of their output thus far. It’s clear that there are influences from dance music on show throughout the album – bubbly synths and arpeggios work to colour their more traditional instrumentation with a decidedly pop feel. Opening with the downbeat Sunken House, it’s an excellent demonstration of what’s to come – foot-stomping rhythms that demand listeners get up and dance, breezy vocals and a seriously charming melody to tie it all together. Previous single Forest Eyes is a more quiet affair, with its ambience and magic juxtaposed with splashes of guitar and Pepa Knight’s delicate piano melodies, and on track Families, Azon’s vocal gymnastics are in full swing. It’s a sugar-sweet offering, and one that reminds listeners of the kinds of summer beach parties that the duo originally met at.

Despite occasionally suffering from moments of homogeneity, Locked By Land is a killer debut from one of Australia’s freshest faces in the indie music scene – not locked by land, but transcending boundaries and drawing influences from all over the world into their own sunshine-filled, unique musical world.
