I, Said The Sparrow : Deathpop

Pretty sure this Perth four-piece released an EP a few years back, and pretty sure I heard it (and dug it). I’ve also seen them live at least once. I seem to remember them having a pretty electronic punky/alternative pop sound. Well, on this – their debut album – they have wound back that electronic edge just a touch, brought the guitars forward a little, and Bob’s your uncle, they sound even better than they already did.

The electronic element is still there, but instead of being right there in your face, it’s now more about providing colour and dynamics rather than being the real focus. And they’ve lost nothing for it – the energy is still there in droves, as is the subtly swaggering attitude.

These guys have come up with a very uptempo, varied and fun collection of tunes here, tunes that won’t fail to get your toes tapping and head bobbing. And the bonus is high quality production and snappy, tight-as-a-fist musicianship. They would no doubt come alive even more in a live setting.

To say 2013 has been a great year for Aussie alternative music is the understatement of the millennium so far. And the stunning releases just keep coming, and coming. Here we are, almost at Christmas, and yet another world class Aussie alternative release bobs up.
