"I've got to go win you back / Your love was like smoking crack / But not like I've ever done that"
They may be called Jacket Weather but their music’s made for lazy summer days, stretching out on a picnic blanket, possibly a little drunk. The yacht rock threesome from Sydney – consisting of former members of Groove City – are just about to release their second EP in short succession, titled Ducks In A Row.
Their first EP Memories, released a mere four months ago, was self-described as “hard as a rock, yet soft as a feather” – they call this one “tongue-in-bill”. The video clip for ‘Crack’, the chorus of which we reference above, features all three in duck outfits, awkwardly serenading slicked-back versions of themselves. Casual humour pervades Jacket Weather, and rather than detract from the lackadaisical indie rock, it compliments it nicely.

On ‘Crack’, as with their first EP, you’ll be quick to notice vocalist Calum Mawson’s Alex Turner-esque refrains followed quickly by Daniel Mugridge’s sanguine guitar. If you’re new to Jacket Weather, you can read all about their first EP here, or better yet, listen to it yourself here. Also reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys, however, Jacket Weather exhibit impressive versatility in Ducks In A Row.
‘Just Do It Well’ explodes into life with a layered riff a la Queens of the Stone Age and once again we’re impressed by Mawson’s vocal range. As with Memories his lyrics are immediately engaging, as is the way he stretches his lines to fit full sentences without ever missing a beat: “I can’t expect you to understand my state of mind / I’m not the man that you thought you could leave behind / The accusations that you made / Go to heelllllll! / If you’re going to take all that I have just do it well”.

The third track from Ducks In A Row, ‘Perfect Night; Not Quite’ (you don’t see semicolons enough in song titles) really lives up to the yacht rock genre, and the band’s own comments around the latest release sum this one up best: “The bay is calm and sparkling, the sun is shining but there’s a cool ocean breeze keeping the temperature low. It’s the kind of conditions that require a luxurious jacket so you can set sail with comfort and style.”
