Birrarung Marr leads Melbourne’s riverfront revolution with 450-metre transformation

Birrarung Marr
words by staff writer

Birrarung Marr's 450-metre stretch of riverfront has been transformed with native plants and boardwalks.

Birrarung Marr has been transformed as the first section of the Greenline Project opens to the public.

Melbourne’s ambitious four-kilometre riverside transformation has hit its first major milestone with the completion of works at Birrarung Marr. The Greenline Project stretches 450 metres from Batman Avenue to the eastern edge of Federation Square, marking the beginning of a generous promenade along the river’s north bank that will eventually connect five distinct precincts.

More than 70 native trees and over 25,000 native plants now line the newly opened space, alongside a 200-metre boardwalk, seating areas and shaded spots for resting. Birrarung Marr has been turned into a destination for the community to gather by the water right on the city’s doorstep, creating more green open space aiming to connect people with nature and each other.

Five inter-connected precincts will make up the full Greenline Project when complete: Birrarung Marr, The Falls, River Park, Maritime and Saltwater Wharf. Each precinct will highlight the area’s rich Indigenous history while providing improved public spaces for events, public art and recreation along the way.

City of Melbourne secured $4.4 million in funding from the Australian government earlier in 2025 to commence planning work for the next sections of the Greenline Project between Birrarung Marr and Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium. Project development and planning will now progress for these crucial stretches of riverfront, bringing Melbourne closer to establishing itself as a garden city with connected green spaces throughout the urban centre.

Works at Birrarung Marr represent an important milestone in transforming Melbourne’s relationship with its riverfront, creating accessible public space that invites people to slow down and experience the Yarra in a completely new way.
