The city has announced new design proposals for the Greenline Project, with a master plan set to be completed in the coming months.

Melbourne’s riverfront may soon look a whole lot different. The Greenline Project, first announced in 2021, has dropped its latest plans to update the four kilometer space between Birrarung Marr and the Bolte Bridge.

The most recent designs released by the project include performance spaces, cultural meeting areas, parks, tree-lined boardwalks and natural wetlands.

Greenline Project shows new plans

  • The huge riverside revitalization is set to transform a four kilometer section of the Yarra
  • The plan will turn the riverside into five sections with distinct features
  • It will now be reviewed by the public before the master plan is created

The project plans to remake the section of riverside into five unique precincts with different purposes.

The Birarrung Marr precinct will feature cultural and events places, areas, undisturbed river views and terraced steps for hanging out or picnicking by the river.

Further down, the Falls precinct will have floating pontoons, a new linear park, and artistic updates to the Banana Alley Vaults. The River Park precinct in Batman Park will have lush greenery and lawns, with a new spot for activities under the Flinders Street viaduct.

Both the Maritime precinct by the Crown and the Saltwater Wharf precinct by Collins St will be equipt with improved boating and fishing amenities.

The project is also committed to showcasing and celebrating contemporary Wurundjeri culture and heritage. The city will now take community input and feedback before moving on to the next stage of the project, so the public can have its voices heard.

The plans for the Greenline Project were created by landscape architects and designers TCL and Aspect Studios and take inspiration from famous waterfront projects across the world including the New York Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Park de Docks in Paris and the Seattle Waterfront.

It is estimated to create around 6400 ongoing jobs by the year 2042 and raise $1.9 billion in private sector investment.

“Our landscape architecture and design experts have crafted an incredible vision for what the Greenline Project could look like – with stunning boardwalks, event spaces, native vegetation and outdoor dining,” says Lord Mayor Sally Capp.
