The first cut from the fourth Arctic Monkeys’ album (Suck It & See, out June 3) is a weighty, capital-R rock tune that follows on pretty seamlessly from the sounds of Humbug. Alex’s verbal dexterity, the crowning glory of their debut record, takes a backseat to some heavy duty guitar stroking here, with a few lazy ‘yeah-yeah-yeah’s in the chorus. It’s alright – ballsy and big – but I prefer the more subtle emotions on show Alex’s new solo EP, Submarine.
