Kicking off the festival comes Frank Yamma, headlining Wominjeka In Concert as part of TERRAIN 2017 alongside a strong lineup of fellow Indigenous musicians. He’ll be joined by award-winning artist Gawurra, as well as Leah Flanagan, Benny Walker and Alice Skye.
Elsewhere, Little Wominjeka Klub will take over The Reverence to keep the party going after the festival opening and closing events, with Bart Willoughby Band and The Stray Blacks taking to the stage.
Further highlights include Weaving Country – exploring remarkable weaving and fibre craft, Scribe at Wominjeka offering storytelling and readings, learning events including a healers workshop and healing clinic, and a series of insightful talks.
Those poised for conversation include Elder Arweet Carolyn Briggs discussing the often-hidden stories of black women as mobilisers and agents of change, followed by talk of arts and sovereignty with panellists Paola Balla, Rosie Kilvert, Nayuka Gorrie, Jacob Boheme and Leuli Eshraghi.
Capping it off, Kutcha Edwards will close out the festival with an intimate concert alongside Robbie Bundle.
“Wominjeka is a significant date on our Festival City calendar,” said Cr Catherine Cumming Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong. “This festival focuses on nurturing a new generation of urban, Indigenous artists who we regard as an integral part of the community.”
