The highly anticipated il Mercato Centrale is finally here and with it, one of Melbourne's most laidback yet passionate wine bars.

This December, Melbourne’s vibrant food scene welcomes a unique addition with the opening of l’Enoteca at il Mercato Centrale, a destination that celebrates authentic Italian wine and food culture.

Led by artisan sommelier Clarissa Lorenzato, l’Enoteca aims to refute the snobbery often associated with wine tasting, offering an inclusive, relaxed and charming space where all can explore the joy of Italian wines.

Clarissa, who hails from the Veneto region in northern Italy, grew up surrounded by vineyards and harvests. Her deep-rooted passion for wine and hospitality led her to a lifelong journey in the industry, including opening her first restaurant at just 15.

Over the years, Clarissa has honed her expertise as a sommelier and wine specialist, and now, with l’Enoteca, she seeks to share her love for Italian wine with Melbourne in a warm, accessible way.

“I want to show Melbournians how Italians view and consume wine,” says Clarissa. “You don’t need to be an expert to appreciate wine; it’s about being open to tasting, experiencing, and learning what your palate enjoys.”

This philosophy is at the heart of l’Enoteca, where guests can enjoy a carefully curated selection of Italian wines, including varieties from Clarissa’s own Veneto region, like the beloved Garganega grape. The list also features Australian wines with an Italian twist, ensuring a diverse and approachable offering.

Located on the top floor of il Mercato Centrale, l’Enoteca enjoys a prime position among other Italian artisans, who provide gourmet food pairings to complement the wines.

The Mercato’s vibrant atmosphere is the perfect setting for l’Enoteca, which aims to create a space where food and drink bring people together in celebration. “Wine is not just a drink—it’s a story, a connection, and a celebration of culture,” says Clarissa. “I want Melbournians to create memories with every glass.”

In addition to its opening, l’Enoteca hosted an exclusive wine-tasting event in mid-December, introducing guests to its fine wines alongside dishes prepared by renowned chefs from La Pizza e i Fritti Napoletani, La Pasta Fatta in Casa and La Pasticceria – all fellow residents at the Mercato.

With its inviting atmosphere, educational approach, and focus on community, l’Enoteca is poised to become a beloved spot for both wine novices and aficionados in Melbourne. The launch marks a significant new chapter in the city’s rich culinary landscape.
