There’s a Coburg icon on its knees, so the bands are rallying round

Words by staff writer

Sydney Road screenprinting spot Troppo Print Studio is launching a Halloween fundraiser, the Hair Raizin' Fundrazor, to stay open.

Troppo Print Studio has spent the better part of a decade as an accessible, community-minded screenprinting room on the Sydney Road strip, running workshops and giving local artists somewhere to make and sell their work.

Now the independent Coburg outfit is fighting to stay put, and the Hair Raizin’ Fundrazor on 1 November is its plan to pull that off.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

Why the scramble? Troppo has stayed proudly free of government funding across its eight years, a point of pride that has also made the going tough. Money raised on the day heads towards cheaper rent for the artists based there, plus a run of studio merch printed as a thank-you to the bands lending their time.

As the name suggests, the day leans hard into Halloween, pitched by the studio as a knife’s-edge affair. Fronting the music from 1pm is Ebi Nori and the Phantom Fingers, joined by Solar Logo Sect, Skid Steer and West End Gap, with the drinks side proudly backed by FIN Wines.

Beyond the bands, there’s a silent auction heaving with artist screenprints and original works, plus a raffle the crew keep hyping. Show bags stuffed with printed pieces and zines are ready to grab, and anyone wanting to get inky can have a crack at by-donation screenprinting or collage badge making.

Can’t make it on 1 November? You can still bid in the auction from afar, drop a donation, or buy one of Troppo’s books and have it posted out. Signing up for a workshop or jumping on the mailing list is another way to chip in. Entry’s free either way, the first band kicks off at 1pm, and the presses keep running until 5pm.
