There’s a wild, free show at the Abbotsford Convent happening this winter

'Interspecians and Other Others' is set to transform the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent for a multisensory experience.

With the historic precinct set to be reborn into an immersive after dark exhibition for the next couple of months, Interspecies and Other Others is a dynamic program of video and sound art, sculpture, installation and performance. Curated by Kelli Alred, it features work from some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, such as Abdul Abdullah, Megan Cope, Atlanta Eke and Lyndal Jones. It takes place on Wednesdays through to Sundays from August 26 until October 2.

A world premiere, Interspecies and Other Others is a rich exhibition of artworks and happenings combined. An immersive nocturnal journey, it features The Interloper (2022), a photographic series by Abdul Abdullah and David Charles Collins that features a fox headed man and an array of farmyard animals.

Exploring the impact that mining has on native wildlife and Indigenous communities as well as the loss and reclamation of language, Megan Cope repurposes the roof of the Abbotsford Convent with a new installation with text written on the Convent’s roof slate in a phosphorescent mineral that is only visible after dark. Atlana Eke explores intergenerational transfer with The Sacred Heart Real Tennis Court (2022), an installation designed for public use.

The exhibition also features works from Lyndal Jones, Sarah-Jane Woulahan, Tony Albert, Dylan Martorell, Geoff Robinson, Shan Turner-Carroll, Zanny Begg, Karrabing Film Collective, Almagul Menlibayeva, Marianna Simnett and Yeo Siew Hua.
