There’s a new park planned for Melbourne, but nobody knows what it will become

A new Melbourne park is coming to Coburg, but it needs your ideas.

New Melbourne park design seeks community ideas and feedback.

Merri-bek Council invites residents to help shape a new park in the inner north of Melbourne at 31 The Avenue, Coburg.

The council is working with Development Victoria to design the new local park, which will form part of the transformation of the site into an affordable residential community. Merri-bek Council wants community feedback on what residents would like to see included in this new open space before finalising the design concept.

Community ideas will inform a draft concept plan that residents will be invited to comment on before Development Victoria finalises the design. The new park at 31 The Avenue, Coburg represents part of broader urban development initiatives aimed at creating more affordable housing options while maintaining quality public spaces for local residents.

This is the latest in a series of new parks launching in Melbourne, from the blue-sky pitches to the already-in-action.

Residents who prefer to share their ideas in person can attend pop-up events where representatives from Merri-bek Council and Development Victoria will be available to discuss the project. The Saturday session will include complimentary coffee for attendees, providing an informal atmosphere for community members to engage with the planning process.

The design process follows a structured timeline with the concept plan expected to be finalised in early 2026. Construction work is anticipated to begin in late 2027, providing the community with a clear understanding of when the new public space will become available for use.

Merri-bek Council’s approach to the new park design emphasises community-driven planning, ensuring that local needs and preferences shape the final outcome. The collaboration with Development Victoria demonstrates the integration of public space planning with broader urban development strategies in the Coburg area.

This community consultation represents one of several initiatives by Merri-bek Council to enhance public spaces and engage residents in local planning decisions. The feedback period allows residents multiple opportunities to contribute their vision for the new community asset.
