The New Pornographers : Whiteout Conditions

pornographers.jpg

The New Pornographers have undergone metamorphosis since their last release with two long term members departing the band. Unobtrusive, the blend of three strong vocalists works well and builds a strong foundation upon which the band can rely for their consistent entry onto the North American charts. Whiteout Conditions doesn’t indicate that there will be any change to this principle.

High Ticket Attractions is jolting Men Without Hats that should garner a larger audience for the band. Given that their career is now well advanced, don’t expect this to be a leap into the unknown or a definitive statement of intent. Whiteout Conditions is solid and muscular, reflecting the collective talents of the band with every member having the opportunity to share the limelight.

We’ve Been Here Before, is like ELO or Genesis may have tackled in the day, while Avalanche Alley is sinewy cerebral power pop. The impression is that The New Pornographers want to return to headier, more naive times, they also possess the sparkle of rejuvenation that comes with age and experience. Despite sometimes shuffling along their own well worn path, they remain an engrossing listen.
