‘BE’ tells the modern-day story of growing up.
A powerhouse new single, produced by a supergroup of hip hop artists and high school students is buzzing through Aussie hip hop communities due to its personal lyrics and themes.
As part of the Voice for Change initiative, a bunch of high-profile and emerging hip hop artists banded together to bring up the next generation of Victorian singers and songwriters. Some of the artists involved in coaching the students included Adrian Eagle, Ecca Vandal, Saskwatch’s Nkechi Anele, Mantra, Mohamed Komba a.k.a. MoMO, Krown and P-UniQue.
Produced by Nic Martin, ‘BE’ delves into the issues teenagers face in day-to-day life and promotes a positive outlook for future generations. The track is raw and unashamed in its storytelling.
“The students had an overall vibe of writing about their family experiences and overall topic of love is the theme that I find a lot of kids enjoy writing and singing about,” Adrian Eagle says.
Even though it was such a personal piece of songwriting, the kids were prepared for the challenge. When coaching the students, Eagle says the students took the lead in what they wanted to sing about.
“We just played them the beat and asked them what they wanted to talk about — rap about and sing about — then we all put our brains together and started flowing,” he says.
“They had all the rhymes though we just encouraged them.”
In addition to the music video’s release, the high school students, known as VFC Next Gen, made their stage debut at the Australian Open Live Stage in January. Also debuting at the Australian Open was a joint track by P-UniQue and Krown, produced by IAMMXO, called ‘Change’.
