Q&A: Howling Dollhouse

Define your genre in five words or less:

Semi-automatic post-apocalyptic melodic rock.

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?

I’ve had a few people say we sound like ‘Alice in Chains’ which is very flattering, but then other people say they can hear elements of ‘Linkin Park’ or ‘Led Zepelin’ to name a few, so who knows. The 5 of us have very diverse musical tastes which all get accommodated in our song writing process. We sound like ‘Howling Dollhouse’.

What do you love about making music?

Personally, I love the writing and recording process probably more than anything else in life. The creative element gives me a huge sense of fulfillment. Playing live is icing on the cake and. Hearing from fans on the other side of the world who love our material always puts a smile on my face.

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?

I would have to say John Lennon. I think he would be blown away at the production quality we’re able to achieve these days and I would hope that he also enjoyed the tunes, as I’ve enjoyed a lot of his. The anticipation while he listened to it would probably kill me.

What can a punter expect from your live show?

Free flowing alcohol, a rowdy bearded man (who is also the star of our latest video), tattoos, girls, loud music, fire and passion.

What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?

Our self titled album is available now on iTunes and from Fist2Face. You can also grab a Howling Dollhouse T-shirt and we’re currently working on some cool print designs for posters.

So, someone is walking past as you guys are playing, they then go get a beer and tell their friend about you… what do they say?

“Holy fuck! I’m speechless!”

Why should everyone come and see your band?

Because life is short and should be lived to its fullest.

Describe the best gig you have ever played.

We played our album launch at The Palace Theatre in Melbourne to an awesome crowd. That was epic!

Describe the worst gig you have ever played.

Haha, we played a party years ago when Azazel (our drummer) had a broken wrist and we were all so wasted it must have sounded like balls. Everyone else was just as hammered though so it went down ok. We then through the drum kit on the bonfire and smashed the rest of our shit. We then woke up the next day to the realisation we had no instruments left. Yep, bad move.

What’s the strangest place you’ve ever played a gig, or made a recording?

In my pool. It was empty over new years a while back so we set the band up in the pool, lights and all and played a show.

When’s the gig and with who?

The next show is at The Wheelers Hill Hotel with Mr Woo as part of the ‘Free Range’ series on Sunday October 7th. The following Thursday we’ll be playing at The Prague.
