Premiere: SERF announces acclaimed new album, launch party

Melbourne artist SERF is releasing his second album 'The Dunes You Wander In' and you can tag along to his launch bash at The Retreat Hotel.

SERF – the arcane term for an agricultural labourer bound by the feudal system – is also the pseudonym of the less bound multi-instrumentalist Rory Maxwell, based in Naarm.

Since 2018, SERF has generated an eclectic catalogue of bedroom rock that pays feeble homage to his indie and post-punk idols of years gone by. He’s currently gearing up to release his second album The Dunes You Wander In this November through the newly formed independent label Honeyglider Records.

Recorded in his bedroom, he describes the new release as a “melancholic yet hopeful reflection on the uncertain present we find ourselves in”.

With influences spanning multiple decades including 80’s post punk, 90’s shoegaze and 00’s indie rock, Maxwell uses vintage drum machines, chorus laden bass-lines and wobbly guitar to craft his charmingly nostalgic take on bedroom rock.

Initially a hobby project, SERF truly took flight when Maxwell quit his full-time role as an ED doctor in 2019. Since then he has had a release heavy two years, most notably his debut EP Health & Education and debut album All You Need In Life Is Someone To Love And Your Family as well as a split single with Polish alt-rockers Love Glove.

The Dunes You Wander will be released November 18 on all streaming platforms. SERF will be celebrating the release with a launch party Friday January 7 at The Retreat.
