What do you get when you cross a mad hunter and a dangerous rabbit? You get a dirty garage rock duo from a small village just outside of Helsinki. The Pink Pussycats from Hell are a Finnish band who love alliteration and puns. Most likely inspired by their proximity to Helsinki – their debut album, Hell-P is filled with track titles such as Hellbow, Hellectric and Hell Dorado. In fact, 12 out of 13 tracks are a play on ‘Hell’ with an exception of the last one Money (That’s What I Want). I guess Helloney (Hell’s What I Hell) made no sense, but as it is a cover, it can be forgiven.
Hellishness aside, the album is solid garage rock. The Pussycats boast a large sound considering they’re only two people with one guitar and a drum kit. With strong growling vocals and distorted guitars, they sound like The Stooges fronted by Jello Biafra (formerly of the Dead Kennedys).
Songs like Hellvolution and Hell Dorado capture this sound perfectly. And as none of the tracks are over four minutes, the album flies by leaving you wanting more. Ready your Hellbows, call your aunt Hellga, it’s time for the Hellvolution.
