EXILES, Arabella and The Heist and D.C. Maxwell are the latest hard-edged acts headlining the venue’s weekly Social Sanctuary night.

Blue Mondays are a myth at the Northcote Social Club. The venue promises local live music every Monday with their Social Sanctuary initiative. Its latest lineup is nothing short of enjoyable.

Headlining its next night are post-punkers EXILES, femme-punk trio Arabella and The Heist and fervent singer-songwriter D.C. Maxwell. These passionate musicians are ready to bring on a fiery hot energy all night long.

Melbourne’s post-punk four-piece EXILES fuse the genre’s entrancing propulsion with starry rock ‘n’ roll swagger. Their spindly rhythms, jagged melodies and raucous guitars soar in the live setting. Drawing likenesses to the carefree garage rock revival of The Strokes and Viagra Boys’s gritty abrasion, they’re explosive with energy.

The effortlessly cool band will be bringing their raw sound to the studio with their upcoming debut album. Produced by Alex Markwell (The Delta Riggs, Mark Ronson), the collection will balance studio polish with their spontaneous live energy. It’s set to be a vigorous guitar album with a pummelling, powerful sound.

Prolonging their ferocity is the fierce, uptempo riffage from Arabella and The Heist. The outfit refuses to let up – their swift songs contain electrifying guitars and signature punk snarling. Taking cues from the likes of rock titans Queens of the Stone Age, IDLES and The Pretenders, the local band’s hasty guitar punk is truly intense.

Also playing is the tender, alt-country from New Zealand’s D.C. Maxwell, the former teenage frontman of high-octane punk band Roidz. Although a far cry from punk’s guitar maelstroms, Maxwell has repurposed the genre’s rockstar ethos into defiantly expressing personal stories of love and loss. With his backing band, his larger-than-life songs are just as triumphant as punk rock itself.

With all this great live music available at no cost, there’d be no reason not to come. Treat yourself to a pub feed of a $20 parma and a $10 pint while you’re at it. Northcote Social Club is the place to be on a Monday night.
