Folk favourite Kim Churchill is back on home turf and heading to Brunswick Ballroom

Kim Churchill is wrapping up an 18-month world tour with eight intimate Australian shows, and Brunswick Ballroom gets a night.

Fresh off a global run behind his latest album It’s Lovely To Have You Here and a support tour alongside Irish alt folk act Kingfishr, Kim Churchill is heading back to Australian soil for a small run of shows to close out the cycle.

The Brunswick Ballroom gig on 13 June is one of just eight dates across the country, so this one’s about as up-close as it gets with an artist who’s spent the better part of two years playing stages across the globe.

Churchill has been a fixture in the Australian and international folk scene since 2009, building a reputation on sentimental songwriting and a warm acoustic sound.

Over the years he’s taken that sound to some serious stages, Glastonbury, Montreal’s International Jazz Festival and South by Southwest among them, as well as a swag of homegrown festivals.

Raised in the coastal NSW town of Merimbula, he’s previously been named Australia’s National Youth Folk Artist of the Year and picked up a nomination for the National Live Music Awards Roots Act of the Year. Not bad for a bloke from the South Coast.

With eight shows spread across the country, Churchill is clearly after something more personal for this run, and Brunswick Ballroom is the kind of spot that suits that energy. It’s a proper sit-down-and-listen room, which makes it a solid fit for an artist whose music tends to reward a bit of attention.

If you’ve been a fan for a while or you’re just getting across his catalogue, this is a good one to pencil in.
