Melbourne duo Loose Tooth return with sophomore album New Age after five-year journey

Words by staff writer

Loose Tooth bring their sunny punk rock sound to Brunswick Ballroom on Friday 22 August following their New Age album release.

The Melbourne duo of Nellie on guitar and Etta on drums have spent five years crafting their 11-track sophomore release, which explores themes of motherhood, grief, politics and identity. Loose Tooth mark a striking evolution from their 2018 debut Keep Up, delivering a more production-heavy sound while maintaining their signature blend of doo-wop harmonies and fuzzy guitar riffs.

Friends since crèche and musical partners since age 14, the pair have been fixtures in Melbourne’s music community since their 2016 EP Saturn Return. Their latest work showcases a mature approach to songwriting, with tracks built from the ground up in the studio rather than road-tested through live performances.

New Age demonstrates the duo’s expanded musical palette, incorporating synthesiser interludes alongside their trademark guitar and drum foundation. The album features undeniable nods to 70s rock influences, with layered singalongs reminiscent of classic acts like Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan. Track Bianca Meyers, described as an ode to a profound psychic experience, showcases the band’s willingness to explore unconventional subject matter.

The album tackles contemporary issues head-on, addressing the housing crisis in Buy Into Something while exploring personal themes of grief and loss in tracks like Suffering and Light Of Day. This breadth of subject matter reflects the band’s growth as songwriters, moving beyond their earlier work to engage with both personal and political concerns.

Loose Tooth’s almost indistinguishable vocal harmonies remain a defining characteristic, creating what sounds like a lifetime of friendship translated into music. The production on New Age allows these harmonies to shine while providing space for the grunge guitar moments that punctuate the album’s flow.
