Funaki grew up in Redlands, an inland California town well east of Los Angeles, in a family that played music constantly. He bought an electric guitar in high school, cleared space in his brother’s bedroom for a makeshift recording setup and worked his way through bass, drums and keys. He played nearly every instrument himself on The Universal Language, a six-song EP released in 2020, then followed it with the album Monterey Village in 2022. Touring came out of his own pocket after that, built on word of mouth: house parties that outgrew themselves, then warehouses, then club rooms that sold out.
Warner Records signed him, and 2026 did the rest. The single Let You In arrived in January, trailed in March by the five-song EP HALF MOON, both leaning into the hazy, guitar-led psychedelia he’s known for alongside shoegaze textures, soul grooves and the odd jazz turn. Between releases he appeared at ACL in Austin, Outside Lands in San Francisco, Lollapalooza in Chicago and Ohana in California, and sold out headline dates through North America and the UK.
Fifty-seven Swan Street gets him first, on a Richmond band room floor, a long way from the bedroom where the recordings started.
