Powderfinger are back, and Melbourne gets four nights at the big top

Words by staff writer

Powderfinger will play 18 shows inside a travelling big top, finishing with four nights at Melbourne Park Oval.

Powderfinger will play their first shows since 2010 in September and October 2027, including four Melbourne dates.

The reunion puts Bernard Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, Jon Coghill and John ‘JC’ Collins back on stage for 18 shows across six cities, and not one of them is in an arena. Powderfinger are touring a stadium-sized big top that packs down and moves on, pitching it at Melbourne Park Oval on 22, 23, 29 and 30 October. Gates open at 5pm. The band has flagged that some seats inside the tent carry a restricted view because of the support poles.

Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne each get four nights, Cairns, Perth and Adelaide two apiece. Their 2010 Sunsets farewell run played to more than 300,000 people, and the catalogue behind it holds seven studio albums, five ARIA number one albums, 18 ARIA Awards and 22 Hottest 100 entries. Powderfinger will curate an all-Australian support lineup with different artists on each date, and a bigger support announcement is due during AusMusic Month in November. The tour is partnered with Mission Australia, and the donation page is already running.

Fan club presales open 14 October, and you need to be signed up at powderfinger.com by 11pm on 13 October to get the link. Telstra Plus members get the same window. Live Nation’s presale starts 16 October, and the general on-sale is 19 October, 10am for Melbourne buyers. Ticketmaster is the only authorised seller, with a limit of eight tickets per show.

Two VIP packages go up alongside the standard tickets. The Vulture Street Experience sits down the front of the tent, and the Passenger Seat Experience puts you in the best seats in the house.

Accessibility covers two dedicated platforms with wheelchair and companion spaces, an Auslan interpreter at every show, and a quiet space at the medical tent for anyone who needs to step out of the crowd. Tickets are mobile only through the Ticketmaster app, and barcodes stay hidden until seven days out as an anti-scalping measure. The Big Issue has the first interview of the reunion, on sale from 13 October.
