You need to listen to Sun Kil Moon’s ‘Couch Potato’ before the end of the decade

Words by Kate Streader

Mark Kozelek’s penchant for sprawling poetic rants have made way for some impressive releases this decade – ‘Philadelphia Cop’, ‘Day In America’, ‘This Is Not Possible’, to name a few – yet ‘Couch Potato’ is the most provocative of the pick.

Clocking over ten minutes, ‘Couch Potato’ takes aim at the current climate of social media obsession and our increasing lack of critical thinking; “I’m telling you people, if you keep pecking away at your phones, Donald Duck gonna be in office eight years, ‘cause of prophecy.”

Like three songs in one, it jumps between melodies and narratives, incorporating dreams, satire and reflections, finishing with possibly the best closing line in the history of songwriting; “The waitress asked the guy at the table how he was doin’/Said ‘The world’s all messed up, but me, I’m doin’ fine’.”
