John Lydon is bringing Public Image Ltd back to Australia after 14 years away

Words by staff writer

Public Image Ltd will bring This Is Not… The Final PiL Tour to Australia and New Zealand in January 2027.

It’s been 14 years, but Public Image Ltd are finally heading back to Australian stages in January 2027.

The six dates form part of Public Image Ltd’s global This Is Not… The Final PiL Tour, which has already seen sold-out runs across Europe and North America throughout 2026. PiL last played in Australia back in 2013, making the upcoming stretch their first visit down under in well over a decade. New Zealand fans have waited even longer, with the band not having performed there since 1989.

The current PiL lineup features John Lydon on vocals alongside longtime members Bruce Smith on drums, Lu Edmonds on guitar and Scott Firth on bass. The four-piece will bring sets spanning the group’s deep back catalogue to venues in Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, with early releases Public Image and Metal Box expected to feature alongside cuts from across PiL’s four-decade career.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale 8 May at 9:00am local time, with general public on sale from 12 May at 9:00am local time. Australian tickets are available via The Phoenix and Metropolis Touring, with New Zealand tickets through Metropolis Touring.

Lydon formed PiL in 1978 following the breakup of the Sex Pistols, and the project quickly set itself apart from punk by fusing dub, rock, electronics and avant-garde experimentation. The result helped shape the emerging post-punk movement. After a hiatus through the late 1990s and 2000s, the band reconvened in 2009 and have been active since, with more than four decades of influential records behind them.

The Australian and New Zealand dates land directly off the back of the tour’s sold-out international run. With stops in six cities across two countries and a catalogue stretching back to the late 1970s, January 2027 marks a rare chance to see PiL on stages in this part of the world.
