James Varnish is a self-made Melbourne synth pop artist who combines fey vocals with dark, glassy orchestration – like Patrick Wolf, without all the idiosyncratic weirdness. As a club track, Compare has legs, but the swinging beat and grim, sexual tone is just not my cup of tea.
