Melbourne’s I, A Man have put out their debut EP, Fifteen Thirty Three, with Big Ideas as their lead single. These guys don’t shy away from complex arrangements and Big Ideas is full of oppositional forces and shifting tones. It’s quite warm, at the same time, with a hearty vocal melody pulling everything together. It doesn’t sound like a single, for some reason, though I can’t quite figure out why. It may be the math rock/folk pop genre straddle they’re doing – the song sounds like it should have a hook, but it’s actually way too slippery and ambitious. It drifts too much for a radio single. Lovely song, anyway.
