Hip Hop: welcome to the ’90s

Two decades ago we were living in the wonderful weirdness of the ‘90s. We were blessed with a variety of great shows from Beavis and Butthead to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. We wore cargo pants, rocked slap bracelets and donned backwards caps.  The ‘90s also brought us some of the most iconic music to date. The hip hop scene was booming and R&B singers climbed the charts, releasing some of the sexiest music ever made. Mariah Carey released her game-changing album Butterfly, R&B princess Aaliyah wooed audiences with her sweet but soulful sound and Bell Biv DeVoe’s Poison has frequently been called the greatest R&B song of the decade.

Now if you’re after some ‘90s nostalgia, you’re in luck. Some of the biggest names in old school R&B and hip hop are heading Down Under. I Love The 90’s returns to Australia in 2018, following sold-out shows earlier this year. The new lineup brings some of the hottest acts in hip hop and R&B from the ‘90s with performances by Naughty By Nature, Blackstreet, Sisqo, Montell Jordan, All 4 One, Rob Base, C&C Music Factory with Freedom Williams and Snap. Don’t miss the tour when it comes to town on Friday March 16 at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

If that’s not enough, there’s also the RnB Throwback tour with three of the best acts from the ‘90s and 2000s. Performing their greatest hits including ‘Dance with Me’and ‘Peaches and Cream’, 112 are set to take the stage. Also on the night you can witness the fierce vocals of Blu Cantrell and experience the famous Euro-dance tracks from way back when, with German band Real McCoy performing live to fulfil your needs. The tour kicks off next month, stopping in Melbourne on Saturday December 16 at Trak Lounge.

Following the success of the R&B Fridays concert series, RNB Vinedays will see the likes of TLC, Boyz II Men, Shaggy, DJ Horizon and Yo! Mafia join forces on stage to perform a number of tunes while you savour that glass of white or red.  The first ever R&B winery concert, this outdoor show will take place on Saturday February 10 at Rochford Wines, Yarra Valley.

If it’s hip hop you’re craving, Grammy Award Winning Big Boi, one half of Outkast, has announced his anticipated return to Australia. The artist released his third full-length solo album BOOMIVERSE earlier this year, and will perform new songs and old hits for his fans at Melbourne’s 170 Russell on Tuesday March 13.
