While Melbourne weather sucks this week, there’s been a surprise announcement that has kept Burn city locals warm on the inside. No, not NSW beating QLD in the Bogan Ball, Aesop Rock has announced a show at The Corner on Saturday September 30. Tickets will sell out, so make sure you buy early. The New York rhymer is considered one of the most prodigious in the alternative hip hop scene. Let’s hope there are some throwbacks to Labor Days (2001) because that release was life-changing. Similarly, Skelethon (2012) has to be mentioned – it’s almost a law. Aesop is known for crazy high-energy shows that go for some length. Couple that with DJ Zone and Rob Sonic and you have yourself one exciting night lined up.
For hip hop fans with aggression issues, Death Grips have a new mix out. Fair warning to the chillers, Death Grips are intense with zero chill in their rhymes. For example this mix, Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber) runs for a mammoth 22 minutes. Gritty, distorted and fragmented, the mix is cut into various samples chaotically spliced together. Those listening with noise-cancelling headphones could be excused momentarily for their disorientation.
Lil Yachty has been causing controversy with his newest album. Teenage Emotions has had more articles written about the album cover than the music itself. If auto-tune doesn’t scare you off, give it a spin. Lil Yachty aims to make fun music and in this circumstance, he succeeds. Catch him at Prince Bandroom on Saturday July 22.
Retayner has been cooking up something fine, teaming up with Greeley to release The Tassie Connection via YouTube. The clip features Wombat, Dunn D, Sammy Scissors, Promise, Plire, Nibs, and Reflekt. The MCs each spit a single verse and skip the chorus, old school cypher style. This is follow-up slice to Retayner and Pyrex’s The Connection from last month, which featured Alex Jones, Gutz, Minas, Bigs, Shookz, Aerows, Carlito, Brisbane Jimmy, Vanguard, Downpat, Sally Sherriff, and L1. It will be interesting to see if and when they make another one of these videos, and which city they’ll harvest MCs from. There are still a ton of rappers who have featured with Retayner in the past, who weren’t present in either video. Hopefully we will see another connection soon.
This weekend, a rap fest is going down at the Gasometer on Saturday June 10. The Juice ISSA Rap Fest will feature Kwasi, Manu Crooks, Gremlns, Sophiegrophy and more. Plus your DJs Prophecy Boyz, REUP DJs, Mat Cant, and Shelley will also be spinning.
Something to look forward to next week is The Greek Resistance Bulletin hosting a hip hop party at 303 Bar on Saturday June 17. The event will be headlined by Curse Ov Dialect (Combat Wombat) and Lady Lash to raise funds for the 3CR Radiothon.
