A narrow, funky shop that features an extensive and eclectic mix of second-hand vinyl records and CDs, this legendary Melbourne based independent record store is not one to miss this Record Store Day.

Boasting the title of “the South’s best”, the shop has it all – spanning genres and styles with a focus on the unique, obscure and unusual. Opening over 40 years ago, at the height of the era of punk, Greville Records became renowned for its punk and independent records.

In recent times, the store remains a vanguard for record store culture in the 2020s, remaining a staple of the community since their opening. Visit them on Record Store Day, April 23, an annual celebration of local vinyl music stores.

“We’re always a pretty personal shop – a lot of our regular customers are friends rather than customers I guess you could say,” says Warwick Brown, the beloved owner of Greville Records on how the store survived the pandemic. “People come and hang out, talk about music and footy and all sorts of stuff. That’s sort of part of running a shop like this – it’s a personal sort of thing.”

Greville Records are a staple of local Melbourne record store culture – a culture that keeps the city vibrant and alive. On their website, Greville Records themselves have summed up this sentiment perfectly: “what’s a city without a cool record store?? sweet f.a.”

Visit Greville Records at 152 Greville St, Prahran 3181. You can give them a ring on (03) 9510 3012 if you’re keen to purchase a record. For more information, or to order vinyl, check out their website here.
