As the Darebin FUSE Festival continues, there are some standout events you won’t want to miss this week.

From visual art exhibitions to innovative sound art performances, there’s something for every art lover to enjoy.

Return Exhibition by Zena Cumpston

The Return exhibition, presented as part of the FUSE Festival, showcases the work of Barkandji artist, writer and researcher Zena Cumpston. This immersive exhibition celebrates the plant knowledge of southeastern Aboriginal peoples, with a particular focus on the cultural landscape of the Darebin area and Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Country.

Featuring artworks, music, talks, and workshops, Return is designed to engage the community with Indigenous knowledge and ecological understanding. Visitors will also receive a resource to help bolster biodiversity at home, making this a meaningful and interactive experience for all.

Scrapper by Noise Scavengers

For fans of sound art and experimental music, Scrapper by Noise Scavengers is not to be missed. This 40-minute performance will delight audiences with its inventive use of junk percussion and found sound. Blurring the lines between rock instruments and electronic music, Noise Scavengers draw inspiration from both Australian and international sound art scenes.

With their unique take on junk and electronic audio exploration, Noise Scavengers will offer audiences an immersive experience in audio play and experimentation.

Select Naturalis 2.0 by The Amplified Elephants

The Amplified Elephants return with Select Naturalis 2.0, a full-length production exploring the process of natural selection through sound. This expanded version of their 2015 work features an innovative audiovisual interface called Resonance, which moves sound through the space via a multi-speaker diffusion system. Developed in collaboration with RMIT University, the work showcases The Amplified Elephants’ creative mastery of sound and technology.

One bonus low cost event: Axon by Speak Percussion’s Bespoke Artists

Speak Percussion presents Axon, a weekend of sonic experiments featuring 12 interdisciplinary works performed across 4 concert programs. From synthesisers to erhu, these artists will showcase innovative compositions that blur the lines between music, art, and technology.

Each concert is a unique exploration of sound, inviting audiences to witness the evolution of new ideas in the realm of experimental music. Axon promises to be an intimate and thought-provoking event for those looking to experience something out of the ordinary.
