Festival Hall threatened by proposal for $65 million apartment complex

It’s been home to countless gigs, ranging from The Beatles to The Mars Volta and everything in between. Chances are, if you’re a live music fan in Melbourne — you’ve been to Festival Hall.

But now the lauded venue could face demolition if a proposal for a $65 million apartment complex is given the green light.

As reported by The Age, a planning proposal has been lodged to Melbourne City Council for apartments, retail and office space, with current owners expected to detail plans to redevelop the site this week.

If redevelopment is permitted, it will likely spell the end of Festival Hall as a live music venue.

Festival Hall has seen the likes of numerous bands since its construction in 1915, and the proposal will likely draw ire and protest from both the music industry and punters alike.

More to come.
