Someone walks past as you’re playing; they get a beer and tell their friend about you… what do they say?
A lot of people we meet at gigs seem to really get into our originals, which we love. The response has been great and everyone does seem to love the British sound.
How long have you been gigging and writing?
Gigging for about a year and writing as a band for around a year and a half. Harry’s been writing since he was 16. Some of the songs we play now were actually written before the band formed but have developed since we all got together and put our own spin on things.
What’s been your favourite gig you’ve played to date?
We recently played a gig for the World Wildlife Foundation for a project in Sydney called the “Sydney Ice Bear” (raising awareness on global warming). We played alongside Katie Noonan on a temporary stage set up in Circular Quay. It was great weather, the sound was phenomenal there was massive turnout and it was for a great cause so it was a definite stand out.
Which band would you most like to have a battle/showdown with?
One of the things we love is playing with other bands and after the recently playing in a band comp I think we’ve sort of gone off the idea of competing by playing music. We make a lot of great friends with other bands and for us; a big part of music is bands supporting each other rather than competing and trying to out-do each other.
What inspires or has influenced your music the most?
Writing wise, (for Harry) it was growing up in England with the likes of Oasis, The Verve and Blur as well as his dad’s Beatles records. As a band the influences come from all over. Musically, we’re all about keeping things fresh and having fun with things, but lyrically it’s usually based around story telling.
What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?
It really depends on what you see as success. More and more, we see bands playing sort of comedic songs to chuck on youtube in the hope of getting views and generating interest that way. But for us, anyone that listens to our music and genuinely likes it is how we measure our success. Ideally if a band stays true to their own sound and really works on exactly that, they seem to have a lot more success in the long run.

We’re releasing our debut EP Waiting For The Sun, on Thursday August 4. It’ll be available at our shows and via our website: www.englishavenue.com.au
Why should everyone come and see your band?
We’re all about the music and we love nothing more than playing our songs live, especially to new crowds. We’ll always guarantee a great show!!
When are you playing live/releasing your album/EP/single/etc?
We have a couple of shows in Melbourne on the Saturday August 6 at RATS and Sunday August 7 at the Evelyn. They’ll correspond with the release of our EP, so we’ll be playing all the songs from the EP and few others. We’re really looking forward to it.
