Before we go into this week’s highlights, some pictures and descriptions have surfaced of the capsules being sold as MDMA that recently caused a string of overdoses and deaths. Apparently the contents of the caps are dark brown with a sticky sugary consistency that looks damp. Test results indicate the contents are PMA or 2C-T-x, both of which cause hallucinations and are dangerous at any dosage. So guys, if you’re going to partake, be aware and be safe. Test kits are available at Smoke Dreams on Flinders St, and will last you around 50 tests.
On to more cheery topics, this Wednesday January 25, Revolver is throwing a massive two room party for the public holiday eve. Veteran techno promoters When The Smoke Clears are taking over the front bar with PWD, Dave Pham, Ranjit Nijjer, Quale, Azrin and Matt Radovich. Occupying the cage in the back bar will be Trust Events & Touring with Dan San, Agent 86, Trust DJs and beloved Revs residents; Boogs and Spacey Space.
On Thursday January 26, American DJ/producer Z-Trip is hitting Laundry Bar. The world class party starter and mash-up pioneer has just about done it all – opened for The Rolling Stones in front of 450,000 people, played for the American troops stationed in Kuwait, toured as LL Cool J’s DJ, collaborated with Beck, written tracks for video games, the list goes on. While Z-Trip’s roots are based in hip hop, in recent times his sets have extended far beyond sticking to a single genre, so expect the unexpected at this excellent opportunity to catch him in a smaller, more intimate venue.
Friday January 27 sees the newly renovated Hugs&Kisses re-open. No lineup details have been released yet, aside from the promise of complimentary bubbles, kabana and cheese. But seriously, how good is kabana?
Elsewhere on Friday, Rainbow Serpent and Stable Music present Capacity 900 at The Bottom End, featuring a completely bonkers lineup: Mathew Jonson (live), Extrawelt (live) and D-Nox & Beckers (live). Jonson has remained a unique voice in electronic music, as a classically trained pianist he understands melody better than most in the scene. Never quite sticking to the rule book of techno and house, Jonson lets his outside influences flow into his sets. Extrawelt are Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe and have been engaged in the electronic music scene since the early ‘90s. Extrawelt came about in 2005 and have frequently topped polls for best live act with their intricately crafted sets winding around minimal tech, acid house, ambient soundscapes and straight up techno.
