Bold and Brilliant: Six female musicians showcase the breadth of Indian music at this free event

Bold and brilliant
words by staff writer

Hosted by The Boite, Bold and Brilliant offers a lovely Sunday afternoon in the park featuring musical offerings from across the Indian diaspora.

Just as people outside of Australia may not know much about our music outside of Kylie Minogue, Tame Impala and AC/DC, Australians still have a lot to learn about music from other parts of the world as well.

This is what The Boite aims to do. The multicultural music institution supports artists from diverse communities, bringing unique cultural offerings into Australia’s music scene and fostering growth and understanding through song. On November 19, the organisation will host Bold and Brilliant: a free, all-ages event featuring six impressive female artists who will show off the many sides of Indian music.

Held from 3 to 6pm at the Fairfeild Amphitheatre, Bold and Brillant welcomes guests to bring their families, dogs and picnic baskets and settle in for an afternoon of music in the sun. The performers – Parvyn, Bhairavi Raman, Malathi Vasudevan, Sarita Mcharg, Kanchana Senthuran and Ranjitha Suresh – will play a variety of different instruments and genres.

Over the course of the day, audiences will have the chance to hear Western and South Indian classical Carnatic music, classical ragas, traditional Indian folk songs, spoken word presentation in languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil and English, Sikh devotional music, Bollywood music and contemporary experimental styles, among others.

Punjabi Australian singer and dancer Parvyn will lead the charge. Influenced by jazz, electronica and her upbringing in the Sikh devotional music scene with her father Dya Singh, Parvyn will be performing a solo set at Bold and Brilliant featuring looped guitar.

Joining her will be the classically-trained bicultural violinist Bhairavi Raman, Bombay-native singer Malathi Vasudevan, classical and contemporary sitarist and vocalist Sarita Mcharg, Carnatic musician Kanchana Senthuran and Hindustani Classical vocalist Ranjitha Suresh.
