Andrew Morris : Shadow Of A Shadow

It is this diversity combined with assured imaginative musicianship that makes this collection so eminently listenable.

Hirsute Aussie singer songwriter Andrew Morris’s fifth solo album Shadow Of A Shadow, was recorded in a hilltop cottage in Queensland.

Belying such rustic origins, it also features contributions from musical luminaries such as Clare Bowditch, Washington, Brisbane’s The Gin Club, Drew Wooton from The Panics, Powderfinger’s Bernard Fanning, You Am I’s Tim Rogers plus Morris’s super-talented bandmates from festival favorites The Wilson Pickers. As such, this intriguing and deeply satisfying album sparkles with creativity and spirited eclecticism.

The mysterious Aypositr, bristling with crashing cymbals, dark and menacing vocals and slippery, back-alley guitar, exudes an almost Gothic vibe that stands in startling contrast to the mellower atmosphere that arises from gentle tunes such as the country-tinged Sovereign Hill or the acoustic Uke Song which could fit neatly into a Sunday morning Pickers gig in the hallowed billowing tents of The Port Fairy Folk Festival.

It is this diversity combined with assured imaginative musicianship that makes this collection so eminently listenable. With so many genre-bending twists lurking around every corner, the listener is guaranteed an interesting and consistently surprising ride. Repeat listens unearth previously overlooked stylistic threads and allow a deeper appreciation of lyrical and musical subtleties. Shadow Of A Shadow is a remarkably confident and incredibly well executed gem.
