All Ages: New Slang is going off with a bang and AJJ are coming to Wrangler

Didn’t get to spend the night with cosmic electro-funk legends GL at NGV Friday Nights? To make you feel better, there’s another special GL show this Friday for the final New Slang of 2017. Time flies, huh? The Push’s very own series of monthly all-ages gig have been feeding us good with amazing lineups every single time.  New Slang have already presented killer acts like Mallrat, Alex Lahey, Japanese Wallpaper, Bec Sandridge, Wil Wagner of The Smith Street Band, and now they’re capping it off with GL, Press Club and Jungle Cuffs. We can only wonder where they go from here.

If you haven’t heard of GL, you’re definitely missing out. If you’re into the ‘80s-dance/disco scene, the duo will likely make you feel at home.  Check out their recently released single Reflect, consisting of glowing instrumentations and hypnotic. On the other hand, self-described frenetic and raw punk group Press Club have only released their hauntingly energetic tune Headwreck, so expect some stunning unreleased material from these guys. Last but not least, some fresh faces you mightn’t have heard of yet. Jungle Cuffs are four girls who happen to have quirky personalities and also make sick garage tunes. Give them a try. The show goes down on Friday October 6 at The Channel Arts Melbourne. Head to artscentremelbourne.com.au for more information.

Unfortunately, another amazing show is happening on the same night as New Slang so you might have to pick sides (or figure out that cloning thing real fast). Electronic goddess Alta will be headlining NGV Friday Nights. Frontwoman Hannah Lesser gives you the ultimate sass on her vocal delivery, while the beats of Julius Dowson are irresistible. Since the release of their EP Stay Awhile in 2012, these two have been enchanting the Melbourne music scene with their danceable tunes that instantly invite you to the dancefloor. If you’re up to cavort all night, you should totally come. In addition, there will be a DJ set from DJ Sampology if you think it’s not home time yet. Head to ngv.vic.gov.au for further info.

If you’re into slightly lighter sounds, Arizona folk-punk outfit AJJ will be playing Wrangler Studios this Sunday October 8. Although, these guys have been showcasing pretty up-beat and cheerful tunes, they’ve been noted for their humorously macabre lyricism. These guys often cover themes of social anxiety, poverty, religion, existentialism and politics (themes that many musicians are often afraid to bring up because you know, risky). Here’s a fact you might like, the band toured with The Smith Street Band in 2015 for their Australian tour, and Wagner said “[front man] Sean might be my favourite living lyricist and we’re all lucky to have his songs in our lives.” Woah, that’s a flattering remark. Well then you know what to do, head to their facebook page for more information. Antonia & The Lazy Susans, Watercolour, Alex Ratiu will be on support duties.
