Yarra Ranges Regional Museum’s new exhibition reveals the woman who was Australia’s first international singing sensation.

When the Yarra Valley comes to mind, one often thinks of its many splendours: beautiful views, exquisite vineyards and, of course, award-winning local wines. But unbeknownst to many, it’s also home to perhaps Australia’s greatest opera diva, Dame Nellie Melba.

Starting this February, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum is hosting a dynamic exhibition A Toast to Melba to honour the achievements of this Australian legend. Come down and learn the local history of Australia’s first internationally renowned classical musician through a series of immersive experiences.

A Toast to Melba

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

Wander the streets of this extraordinaire’s home and bask in the natural wonders she praised as her sources of inspiration, “the vast ranges of eucalyptus forest, the sunny skies, and the native wild birds … singing, singing all the time”. These exhibits will guide you through the Yarra Valley and Melba’s life.

Begin with Melba’s story at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum. Exploring her keepsakes and photographs, you can dive deeper into intimate glimpses of her life.

Located in Lilydale, the multi-award-winning museum features an architecturally stunning design and a tranquil environment that offers plenty to explore, including a museum shop and a café.

Close by is the Atheneum Theatre where she performed four times, so pop in and transport your mind back to 1884 when this vocal powerhouse was gracing the stage.

Continue your Melba journey by heading down to her sixty-acre Australian home, Coombe Cottage. Soak in its decorative charm and imagine yourself at one of her infamously lavish parties before you settle down for a sweet treat. Enjoy your Peach Melba, a French pastry inspired by the icon’s performance in the opera Lohengrin all while lounging in her grandiose abode.

Round the tour off by visiting her tombstone at the beautiful Lilydale Lawn Cemetery where you can reflect on her exciting and wonderful life. From performing around the world to her luxurious home life among friends and family, there is so much to learn about Melba.

Yarra Ranges Regional Museum will make talks, tours, special events and more available for patrons starting in February, offering plenty of opportunity to follow along or choose your own Melba adventure.

A Toast to Melba is running from February 15 to June 29. All booking and other information about this immersive exhibit can be found here.
