Blanc de Blanc Encore extends to a record 40-week Melbourne run

Words by staff writer

Spiegel Haus Melbourne's flagship cabaret show hits a major milestone during Melbourne Comedy Festival's 40th year.

Blanc de Blanc Encore has stretched its season to a record-breaking 40 weeks at Spiegel Haus Melbourne.

The Strut & Fret production announced its third extension on 16 April, with Lord Mayor Nick Reese and Victorian Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks both marking the occasion.

“Spiegel Haus Melbourne has captured the hearts of Melburnians since opening last year – drawing crowds and delivering a strong boost to businesses across the Chinatown precinct,” Reese said.

The cabaret and circus show, laced with vintage French glamour and high-wire acrobatics, reaches its milestone during the 40th birthday edition of Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Spiegel Haus Melbourne has had a packed opening run since launching in the Chinatown precinct six months ago. The CBD venue is projected to hit 100,000 ticket sales across its inaugural season, with strong turnout for its free events and hospitality programming too. The multi-level space has also become a key festival hub, hosting work for both Midsumma and Melbourne Comedy Festival.

The venue has carved out a niche the city centre has been missing, with purpose-built performance spaces seating between 200 and 500 across multiple levels. That intimate setup, combined with a diverse programming calendar spanning live performance, music and late-night hospitality, has pulled in both punters and performers.

Beyond ticketed shows, Spiegel Haus has positioned itself as a multi-purpose destination. Its hospitality zones and free events have driven foot traffic to the surrounding Chinatown precinct, providing a boost to businesses in the area.

Blanc de Blanc Encore itself is a full-throttle collision of old-school cabaret, acrobatic circus, comedy and champagne-fuelled spectacle. The independent production has managed to draw repeat audiences in a city with no shortage of things to do on any given night.

For Melbourne Comedy Festival, Spiegel Haus represents a valuable addition to the city’s cultural infrastructure. The festival has historically relied on temporary CBD venues to accommodate its expanding program, and a permanent option designed for cabaret and circus fills a gap where dedicated spaces have long been limited.
